Pathology & Mortuary Building – Watford General Hospital
Integrating Critical Healthcare Logistics in a Live Environment
Bailey Partnership was commissioned by Western Building Systems Ltd to design and deliver a highly serviced, three-storey pathology and mortuary facility. Operating under a fast-tracked Design and Build framework, this £6.5M project is a key enabler for the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s long-term masterplan. We provided architectural, space planning, interior design, and MEP services alongside structural and civil engineering from Alan Wood & Partners.
Precision Engineering
Vibration Control for Clinical Diagnostics
The architectural and engineering strategy had to overcome significant structural challenges to accommodate high-precision clinical laboratory equipment.
To achieve the strict structure-borne vibration floor factors required for high-magnification microscopy and precision analytics, we utilised a traditional heavy steel frame constructed on piled foundations, incorporating precast concrete flooring and a concrete-topped metal deck.
The building is clad with a combination of brick slips, reflecting the surrounding residential streets and metal cladding panels.
Service-Driven Design
Environmental Stability & Dedicated Plant Infrastructure
Preserving clinical floor space was paramount in this heavily serviced building. Our MEP team designed a fully accessible 2nd-floor plant deck enclosed behind an architectural louvred screen, alongside internal second-floor plant rooms housing critical mechanical ventilation units and bulk water storage.
The facility features entirely fixed glazing to maintain tightly controlled internal airtightness and pressure regimes, utilising full mechanical ventilation to ensure absolute environmental stability across all laboratory areas.
Complex Site Logistics
Maintaining Emergency "Blue Light" Operations
The site location was created by diverting an active emergency “blue light” vehicle route, demanding meticulous logistical coordination.
The facility integrates seamlessly with existing hospital infrastructure, including a physical link to the neighbouring Shrodells building and a connection to the hospital’s pneumatic tube system for the rapid transit of samples from A&E directly to pathology.
The mortuary suite incorporates dedicated ambulance delivery zones, access for the regional blood bank, discrete viewing rooms, and clear public/private separation.
